Poetry

Page history last edited by Beth Lifson 1 yr ago

To get us started, here is a poem by William Carlos Williams called simply "The Poem":

It's all in

the sound. A song.

Seldom a song. It should

be a song—made of

particulars, wasps,

a gentian—something

immediate, open

scissors, a lady's

eyes—waking

centrifugal, centripetal.

This is a two part assignment.

1) Answer the following questions about WCW's poem:  What does WCW mean when he writes "It should/ be a song - made of/ particulars"?  Next, share your overall analysis of the poem including your ideas on WCW's use of line breaks and imagery.

2) Write a poem entitled "The Poem" in which you explore your own poetics.  Begin this poem with the line "It's all in the sound..."

FINAL PROJECT POSSIBILITY!  Watch this video of WCW's "The Great Figure," found here:

Consider creating a video to illustrate a poem (yours or someone else's).
